Security Shake-up: Why President Tinubu’s Top Bodyguard, Fasasi, Was Ousted

Behind the Scenes: Why President Tinubu’s CSO Adegboyega Fasasi Was Removed
More information has emerged regarding the removal of Adegboyega Fasasi, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Chief Security Officer (CSO). Reports indicate that the decision was part of a larger restructuring within the Department of State Services (DSS), led by its new Director-General, Tosin Adeola Ajayi, with the full backing of President Tinubu.
Fasasi, who had been replaced by Rasheed Atanda Lawal, a deputy director currently on a fellowship at the National Institute for Security Studies, was issued his removal letter after arriving back in Nigeria with Tinubu following the president’s two-week vacation. Sources revealed that Fasasi is set to attend a year-long security course abroad, signaling a diplomatic exit from his position.

According to insider reports, Fasasi’s rapid promotions within the DSS, allegedly fueled by favoritism, led to discontent within the ranks. He was promoted three times within a year, bypassing senior officers who had been with the agency for much longer. Lawal, the new CSO, had his own promotion delayed due to this favoritism under the former DSS management.
Further accusations against Fasasi include claims of arrogance, high-handedness, and disrespect, which reportedly caused dissatisfaction around the president. Though these allegations are unverified, sources say that President Tinubu was not pleased with Fasasi’s performance.
This move is part of Ajayi’s mission to restore integrity and professionalism to the DSS, and more changes are expected within the agency as the restructuring continues.
