Obasanjo Defends Ifa Despite Being A Christian

Olusegun Obasanjo, a former Nigerian president, has discussed the reasons why Africans must protect African cultural heritage, including Ifa, despite his Christian faith.

Obasanjo, who spoke in his hometown, Abeokuta, mentioned, “I am a Christian and attended two churches today, but that does not mean I should forget my culture.”

“For whatever reason, we must preserve our culture. We must not joke with our culture. We are being relegated to the background; our language is being relegated, as are our food, our dress, and others. We must not allow it. They are things that are authentic. Yoruba is not vernacular.

Obasanjo also called the people who disregard Ifa ignorant.

He also listed the importance of Ifa Orunmila, which translates to “It is Heaven that knows who will be saved.” In his submission, he says that the African traditions were before Islam and Christianity and must be protected from going into extinction.
