The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), headed by Comrade Joe Ajaero, has appealed to citizens of the country to strongly reject the proposed 50% increase in telecom tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Federal Government.

A request for a 100% increase was initially put forward by telecom operators, making it the first time that it will be adjusted in over ten years. Knowing that the telecom field contributes 14% to Nigeria’s economy, the government’s approval of the 50% hike was to revitalize the sector.

The Labour Union says that the 50% hike is too much, highlighting economic hardship and rising inflation. Once the 50% hike is implemented, the cost for a call per minute will increase to N16.50 per minute, messages will go for N6, and N431.25 per GB.

Comrade Joe Ajaero mentioned that the approval was wicked and called on relevant stakeholders to sit for engagement to devise other sustainable ways that will not affect the livelihood of the Nigerian citizens.
