“Gynaecologists Clarify: ‘No Sex Position Can Accelerate Pregnancy for Women'”

Leading gynecologists have clarified that, barring any reproductive issues in women or non-viable sperm, sexual positions do not influence conception chances.

Despite popular beliefs suggesting that certain positions—such as missionary, doggy style, and spooning—might facilitate faster conception, maternal health experts stress that there is no scientific proof to support these claims. A review by PUNCH Healthwise showed that some sources argue these positions allow the penis to be closer to the cervix, purportedly aiding sperm flow into the fallopian tubes, but experts dismissed this notion as unfounded.

According to Professor Ernest Orji, a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, “There’s no sexual position that makes conception easier or quicker. Once healthy sperm enters the vagina, conception can occur, regardless of the position.” Orji further noted that the orientation of the womb or cervix doesn’t impede sperm movement, as sperm can freely reach the cervix unless there’s a blockage.

Dr. Stanley Egbogu, a Consultant Gynecologist, echoed this view, emphasizing that sexual positions only hold significance when attempting to influence the sex of a child. Egbogu also highlighted the risks of relying on the withdrawal method as contraception, noting that pre-ejaculatory fluid can contain sperm, making pregnancy possible even before full ejaculation.

Both experts agreed that if pregnancy is to be avoided, established contraceptive methods—such as emergency contraception, oral contraceptive pills, condoms, injectables, implants, and intrauterine devices—are recommended.
